Here is a photo of a timber retaining wall we built at a commercial property. This photo is a good example of what a deadman is. A deadman is a timber that anchors the wall to the soil behind the wall preventing the wall from falling over. The timbers sitting in the stone backfill is the deadman. It is connected to the wall and runs perpendicular to it. It then connects to another timber that is running parallel to the wall that is sitting in the stone backfill. As the weight of the soil tries to push the wall over, the timber running parallel to the wall has to be pulled through the stone backfill.By placing these deadmen throughout the wall the wall is anchored in and does not fall over.
